Libby Trickett second in women's 100m freestyle final at Beijing Olympics

LIBBY Trickett was beaten in the final of the 100m freestyle, taking the silver medal behind German Britta Steffen.
Trickett, who scraped into the final only after a disqualification the day before when she was ninth fastest in the semi finals, led at the halfway mark but could not hold off the fast-finishing Steffen over the last ten metres. Steffen swam a new Olympic record of 53.12sec to defeat Trickett by only .04sec.Trickett swam .28sec outside her personal best of 52.88sec which is the world record. After the race, a smiling Trickett acknowledged she was lucky to be in the final after yesterday's disastrous semi swim. "I'm human, I make mistakes," Trickett said. "You see heroes like Michael Phelps get up and you think it's easy - it's not. I'm so pleased - I was lucky to make it so the fact that I had another opportunity, I'm very thankful for."
