Laszlo Cseh of Hungary was second, 2.29sec behind Phelps and Ryan Lochte of the United States third. Only half an hour earlier Lochte won the men's 200m backstroke final in a new world record, and his effort in that race told in the medley. Cseh challenged Phelps over the first 100m, but Phelps demoralised the field in the breaststroke leg and then swam away in the last 50m. Tomorrow, Phelps will swim in the final of the 100m butterfly to tie Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals. On Sunday his last event will be the men's 4x100m medley relay.
